Istraživači iz Harvard-Smithsonian centra za astrofiziku uspjeli su nešto što je do sada smatrano izazovom: prvi put su mapirali magnetsko polje Lokalnog mjehura – divovske šupljine u svemiru ispunjene prašinom i plinom u kojoj se nalazi naš Sunčev sustav. Ovaj proboj nije samo tehnički uspjeh, već korak koji otvara nova pitanja o tome kako superbubnjevi oblikuju galaksiju.

Lokalni mjehur, struktura promjera oko 1.000 svjetlosnih godina, poznat je astronomima već desetljećima, ali njegova magnetska svojstva ostala su neistražena do sada. Magnetska polja igraju ključnu ulogu u dinamici međuzvjezdanog medija, utječući na sve od stvaranja zvijezda do širenja kozmičkih zraka.
