Roadrunner je zanimljiv zato što pokušava spojiti dvije logike kretanja u jedan stroj: kotače za brzinu i noge za prepreke. To je korisno kad robot mora izaći iz laboratorija i kretati se po prostoru koji nije savršeno ravan, predvidljiv ili čist. U tom smislu, koncept ima smisla.

Ali demo nije isto što i radni alat. Video pokazuje koliko platforma može izgledati uvjerljivo u kontroliranom okruženju, no ne govori ništa o tome koliko energije troši, koliko često treba servis ili koliko je osjetljiva na male greške u balansiranju. Upravo su to stvari koje obično odluče hoće li robot završiti u pilotu ili u proizvodnom pogonu.

RAI Institute bi zato trebao biti otvoreniji oko stvarnih ograničenja: nosivosti, autonomije i brzine prijelaza između načina kretanja. RAI Institute i IEEE Spectrum mogu prodati ideju, ali industriju će zanimati samo ono što radi nakon prvih tisuću ciklusa.

Hibridna mobilnost je tek prvi korak

Najveći izazov je zapravo pouzdanost. Hibridni sustavi su gotovo uvijek složeniji od jednofunkcijskih, a to znači više mehaničkih spojeva, više senzora i više mjesta na kojima nešto može zakazati. Ako robot mora preživjeti skladište, bolju ocjenu neće dobiti od estetike pokreta nego od broja sati bez intervencije.

To je razlog zbog kojeg se ovakvi projekti često vole prikazivati kroz video, a rjeđe kroz brojeve. U stvarnom deploymentu trebaju se znati intervali održavanja, zamjena dijelova, otpornost na prašinu i ponašanje pri stresnim manevrima. Bez toga, Roadrunner ostaje zanimljiv demonstrator, ali ne još i platforma.

Ako dođe do šire primjene, najbolje mjesto za početak bit će okruženja gdje se robot kreće između različitih podloga i visinskih razlika, ali bez prevelikog ljudskog rizika. Dok to ne vidimo, Roadrunner je dobar podsjetnik da u robotici zanimljiv pokret još nije isto što i koristan proizvod.
