NASA-in rover Curiosity nedavno je naišao na neočekivano otkriće: naslage opala na površini Marsa. Ovaj mineraloid, koji na Zemlji često nastaje u interakciji vode i silicij-dioksida, dosad je na Crvenom planetu bio potvrđen samo u tragovima. No, najnovija analiza spektralnih podataka s instrumenta ChemCam ukazuje na značajno prisustvo u području Gale kratera, gdje rover već godinama obavlja istraživanja. Otkriće nije samo još jedan geološki detalj. Opal, kao hidrofilni materijal, sadrži molekule vode zarobljene unutar svoje strukture. Prema preliminarnim procjenama, ovaj bi mineral mogao biti ključni izvor vode za buduće ljudske misije, budući da se voda može relativno jednostavno ekstrahirati zagrijavanjem. To mijenja perspektivu o održivosti dugoročnih baza na Marsu, jer dosad su glavni kandidati za vodu bili polarni ledenjaci i podzemne naslage leda – obje teško dostupne bez složene infrastrukture.

Curiosityjeve nalaze treba smjestiti u širi kontekst marsovske geologije. Rover već godinama proučava slojeve Gale kratera, za koji se vjeruje da je nekad bio ispunjen jezerom. Prisustvo opala dodatno potvrđuje hipotezu da je Mars u prošlosti imao hidrotermalne sustave, slične onima na Zemlji, gdje voda i minerali međudjeluju pod visokim temperaturama i tlakom. NASA-in službeni izvještaj naglašava da ovo nije samo znanstvena zanimljivost, već potencijalni resurs. Ipak, ostaju otvorena pitanja. Koliko je opala zaista dostupno i u kojem obliku? Hoće li ekstrakcija biti energetski isplativa? I što to znači za naše razumijevanje marsovske prošlosti? Sljedeći koraci uključuju detaljniju analizu uzoraka i mapiranje distribucije opala u drugim dijelovima planeta.
