Senator Ed Markey traži od sedam vodećih robotaxi tvrtki, uključujući Waymo, Teslu i Zoox, da otkriju koliko često njihovi udaljeni operateri moraju intervenirati. Tvrtke šute. Ovdje nije ključno samo koliko ljudi pomaže vozilu, nego i kako se ta pomoć računa, bilježi i objavljuje. Bez transparentnosti, robotaxi industrija traži povjerenje bez dokaza.

U praksi, udaljeni operateri nisu sporedni dodatak nego dio arhitekture sustava. Neke tvrtke ih koriste samo za savjete, druge dopuštaju i punu kontrolu, ali bez javnih brojki teško je usporediti modele ili procijeniti rizik. Ako se „autonomno“ vozilo redovito oslanja na ljude u pozadini, onda to nije loša tehnologija. Samo je loše definirana.

Regulatorni pritisak će se zato povećavati. Javnost sve teže prihvaća da industrija skriva osnovne podatke o tome koliko je ljudske intervencije potrebno da bi samovožnja uopće funkcionirala.

Drugim riječima, pravi proizvod možda nije autonomija, nego daljinski spašena autonomija.
