Japanski tim pokazao je robotski sustav inspiriran moljcem svilcem koji može pratiti mirise i kad otkaže jedan od senzora. To je pametan potez jer priroda već ima rješenje za redundanciju i navigaciju bez pretjerane elektronike. U laboratoriju to radi uvjerljivo.

Ali okoliš je pravi protivnik. Vlaga, prašina, vjetar i promjenjiva disperzija mirisa brzo pretvaraju urednu demonstraciju u puno teži problem. Zato ovaj robot nije važan samo kao tehnološki trik, nego kao dokaz da se osjet mirisa može učiniti robusnijim.

Ipak, još je daleko od terenske primjene. Trenutak u kojem robot pronađe miris nije isto što i trenutak u kojem će preživjeti cijeli zadatak.

Najveći izazov je pouzdanost u neurednim uvjetima. Sustav mora raditi bez čiste laboratorijske kontrole i bez oslanjanja na savršeno kretanje zraka.

Zato je ovo dobar istraživački pomak, ali ne i gotov proizvod. Ako baterija, senzori i okoliš ne surađuju, algoritam nema puno prostora za spas.

Drugim riječima, moljac je dobar učitelj. Kiša je loš učenik.
